Disaster & Risk Management

The Latin America region is one of the most disaster prone regions in the world. It is often a witness of Volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, droughts and floods. According to International Disaster Database of CRED, as of February 2013, 76 disasters affected 12 million people in the region only in 2011. Governments in the region are painfully aware of the vulnerability of the region and committed to minimising loss of life and property in case of future disasters. With the aid and assistance of many multilateral agencies, donor organisations and NGOs, each country is endeavouring to apply technologies such as high resolution satellite data, GIS and other ICTs for addressing the four cycle of Disaster Management - Preparedness, Response, Recovery and Mitigation. The programme on Disaster Management at Latin America Geospatial Forum will include presentations by invested government agencies, multilateral organisations and private sector industry on use cases of technologies for disaster management, innovation in technologies etc.
